It seems that every pregnant woman has heard of or is going to a pregnancy yoga class. The celebs certainly endorse it with many taking to Instagram to show off their active bump.
But what happens at a YogaBirth class is not your normal pregnancy yoga....
Accredited by The Royal College of Midwives (the voice for Midwives in the UK) YogaBirth classes incorporate detailed birth preparation within every one of their sessions. Not just asana's suitable during pregnancy but specific body and mind preparation understanding how and why your body will need to move during labour.
YogaBirth classes are deeply inspired by the style of Scaravelli yoga.
Vanda Scaravelli who started her own yoga journey in her late 40's developed her approach specifically towards the breath (pranayama), gravity and the spine. One of Vanda's great gifts to yoga practice was freedom. She gave permission to follow your own inner teacher, liberating yoga practice from the restriction of rules and traditions. She encouraged students to understand that, ultimately, we are our own best teachers – all we have to do is listen deeply and increase our awareness. “Do not kill the instinct of the body for the glory of the pose.Do not look at your body like a stranger, but adopt a friendly approach towards it. Watch it, listen to it, observe its needs, its requests, and even have fun. To be sensitive is to be alive.“
Learning to listen to your body in this way is an essential skill to working towards having a calm and confident birth. At YogaBirth we teach this awareness and total understanding of the bodies ablity to birth naturally. Our yoga preparation will enhance this ability by keeping you strong; gently stretching the areas that need to move during your birth journey.
Unique to a YogaBirth class is our antenatal preparation. Most teachers choose to create an informal womens circle at the end of their class where you can enjoy refreshments and get to know other mums to be. In this relaxed, unbiased atmosphere you will learn essential birthing knowledge, hear first hand experiences from previous mums in the group and be able to learn, share your thoughts and overcome any obstacles in confidence. You will be shown how gravity, essential to Vanda Scaravelli's yoga style, influences the success of a natural birth, why movement can establish labour and how to use deep relaxation as a comfort measure.
